The collection consists of twelve letters, all sans year but circa. 1870-1880, including: to Miss Gatty, commenting on her view that one of his submissions may be inappropriate for the audience of Aunt Judy, and hoping to send a replacement; nine letters from Calverley to Walter Wren, full of family and personal news, with professional legal opinions, particularly on Wren's will, and some discussion of the Irish Problem. Also, two letters from Ellen Calverley to Wren, thanking him for his thoughtfulness, especially for sending a book.

Charles S. Calverley was a Victorian author, known for his light, satirical verse. Born Charles Stuart Blayds, he compiled a checkered career at Cambridge and later Oxford, taking many prizes and honors upon his graduation. He trained and practiced as a lawyer, but committed time to writing, focussing on translations and highly-praised light verse. His wicked parodies were ground-breaking in their subtlety, and his adherence to traditonal style countered the ambitious verse of his contemporaries...
